So we’ve critiqued the fantastic fashion, the surprise fashion and the hell-to-the-no fashion, now it’s time to talk about the performances.
Miley Cyrus said it perfectly in an interview following her extremely controversial 2013 MTV VMA Awards twerk-fest saying that it’s the video awards, it’s all about crazy visuals that people should talk about! You said it girl!
Now Britney may not have kissed Madonna and Miley may not have twerked again with Robin Thicke and a foam finger, but there were still some incredible history making moments!
The show opened with Ariana Grande and her smash single ‘Break Free’ Feat. Zedd where she appeared from a space pyramid and continued with Nicki Minaj’s record breaking hit ‘Anaconda’. For part three of the seven minute medley, Ari, Nicki and Jesse J smashed their girl power anthem ‘Bang Bang’.
People were patiently anticipating the Anaconda performance as reports that one of Minaj’s back -up dancers was bitten by an actual anaconda during rehearsals was released a few hours before the show. The anaconda may have been removed from the live performance but people couldn’t care less with Nicki’s booty and dance moves stealing the show! Rita Ora’s face says it all!
But talk didn’t end for Minaj though with a wardrobe malfunction during the ‘Bang Bang’ part of the medley! The poor thing had barely seconds to quickly change outfits….and the zipper broke. So for the entire performance there she was with one hand holding her outfit together to prevent a misfortunate international live flash! But like a pro she sung her rap like nothing had happened.
Taylor Swift also debuted her live performance of her new single ‘Shake It Off’ of her fifth studio album ‘1989’ to be released late October and as always, she crushed it! Sporting her cheesy dance moves in a silver tassel two piece, the 24-year-old delivered a spectacular and entertaining performance!
Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora took to the stage as well to perform their collaboration ‘Black Widow’ and unlike earlier this week in rehearsals when Azalea tripped and fell of the stage, there were no malfunctions and the pair nailed it! Bringing the lyrics
“You used to be, thirsty for me, but now you just want to be set free.
This is the web, the web that you weave, so baby now rest in peace”
to life, the duo found themselves entangled in a giant spider web with live drummers, violinists and ballet dancer. An incredible set, sound and performance!
2014 has been massive for the Western Sydney youtube boys 5 Seconds of Summer. With a number 1 debut album the Aussies have taken the world by storm. The VMA’s primarily have performances that are upbeat dance tracks, but the boys defied tradition and went for a ballad with their current single ‘Amnesia’. Although it was a stripped down ballad, the Aussies threw in their electric guitars and drum kits and sang with such emotion all the teenagers around the world were reaching for the tissue box!
But the must talk about performance was the 16 minute Queen Bey Medley. How many artists can perform a non-stop 16 minute mashup with 12 songs from her current album only! That’s why she’s the queen. Mashing ‘Mine’, ‘Haunted’, ‘No Angel’, ‘jealous’, ‘Blow’, ‘Drunk in Love’, ‘Rocket’, ‘Partition’, ‘Flawless’, ‘Yonce’, ‘Blue’ and ‘XO’ it was mesmerising. Announcing her pregnancy with adorable daughter Blue Ivy at the 2011 MTV VMA Awards, speculation was that she was going to address divorce rumours during today’s performance too. But the world was wrong. Despite what the tabloids have been saying, the power couple put divorce rumours to rest as husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy awarded Beyonce with the Michael Jackson Vangaurd Lifetime Achievement Award. Before accepting the prestigious award, she kissed her family and the extremely emotional superstar said;
“I just thank God for this moment. Blue, I love you, my beloved, I love you, my fans, I love you, MTV, I love you.”
And in true form, the musical night ended!
